How to Find a HiSET Test Center and Test Date
The website of Educational Testing Service (ETS), the administrator of the HiSET, is the best resource for finding available HiSET test centers and dates. Creating an account on the ETS website is the easiest way to search for available dates and centers by city and state, but this may also be done without creating an account. Major cities generally have the greatest availability. For example, there are currently about 35 test centers within 100 miles of New York City that offer either the paper or computer HiSET. The HiSET may be taken throughout the year, although the number of available test dates depends on the individual test center.
Registration for the HiSET
Students are not required to register or to take all five HiSET subtests at the same time. The subtests may be taken in any order and on different days. The HiSET registration procedure varies by location. In some places, exam dates can only be scheduled directly with the test center, while in others, online registration through the ETS website or phone registration are possible. ETS advises students to begin the registration process by reviewing their jurisdiction's exam eligibility requirements. Once eligibility for the HiSET is confirmed, students may search for test centers and dates (both of these steps can be completed on the ETS website). Test appointments may be rescheduled up to 11:59 PM EST on the day before the test (how the process is completed depends, again, on testing location).
Fees for the HiSET
The ETS fee for the HiSET is $10 per subtest, or $50 for the entire exam. There may also be test center and state fees for the HiSET. In Louisiana, for example, the test center fee is $6, and the state administration fee is $10, both of which must be paid for each subtest. A full HiSET administration in Louisiana would therefore have a total cost of $130.
HiSET Registration Policies
Students may retake any or all HiSET subtests within 12 months of fee payment without additional ETS testing charges, but individual test centers will sometimes expect payment for retakes. ETS limits students to three subtest attempts within any continuous 12-month period, but each state sets its own additional policies for retakes (Louisiana, for example, mandates a 30-day waiting period between test attempts).
The HiSET for Spanish Speakers
The HiSET is available in either English or Spanish. Students may take the test in either language, but they must choose Spanish or English for the entire test (taking one section in English and another section in Spanish is not allowed). Not all test centers offer the HiSET in Spanish, but students may find a list of locations on the official state websites. To find a list of test centers that provide the HiSET in Spanish, see the links on the individual state pages for the HiSET on the ETS website.
HiSET Policies for Disabled Students
ETS Disability Services is dedicated to providing reasonable accommodations for test-takers with disabilities that may affect their performance. The process for requesting accommodations takes about six weeks, and must include documentation for all disabilities that are relevant to testing. This process can be completed only by communicating directly with ETS Disability Services. Common testing accommodations include extended exam time, large-print exams, use of a calculator, or additional breaks.
